Ransomware Protections

May 24th, 2017

Did you know that there was a major ransomware attack across the globe recently? On May 12th, WannaCry/WCry 2.0 infected tens of thousands of computers, taking the user’s data hostage and demanding bitcoins to release it. Data was compromised, destroyed, and only in rare cases saved. This is especially bad for public, financial, and healthcare institutions, where protection of sensitive data is required by national regulations. According to reports, the attack was possible due to a Microsoft Windows vulnerability, as well as downloads via email zip files. Businesses protected by enterprise-level security systems were most likely already protected by secure firewalls and anti-virus software, but too many computers were hit by these attacks. What are some ways you can protect against ransomware attacks?

  • – back up all of your data on to external devices or cloud systems
  • – don’t open zip files or attachments from unknown email addresses
  • – don’t send sensitive information via email without verifying the identity of the recipient
  • – talk to HIPAA Compliance Officer and assess system vulnerabilities
  • – install OS updates and keep your security software up-to-date
