Perched on a mountainside surrounded by pine and oak trees, Feather River College is located in the small town of Quincy in Northern California. The two-year, fully credited college prides itself on providing a sanctuary for self discovery, study and relaxation where academic rigor is maintained in a friendly, informal atmosphere.
Millions of malicious self-replicating packets flooded the campus network. Internet access and e-mail ground to a halt due to all the unwanted traffic. The congestion prevented most students and faculty from retrieving their applications and data. Overloaded computers crashed, and the university's web site was not functioning. Connectivity to residence halls had to be shut down. Worse, the malware was emanating internally on the network because of the inadvertent actions of legitimate users. The university was crippled and had to take action immediately.
When Florida's honors school, New College of Florida, hired CIO Erich Matola in 2005, the Sarasota campus was at the mercy of an aging data infrastructure, frequent outages and a phone system dating back to the 1980s. Outsourcing maintenance of New College's entire data and voice network was costing the school more than $600,000 a year. Within a week of arriving, Matola had installed a stopgap firewall to secure the email network that failed on his first day, but he knew the larger challenge lay ahead—providing the sophisticated technology that students, faculty and staff expect from an elite institution, while affordably transitioning to in-house network control—all with a small IT staff still to be hired.
Today's higher education institutions need networks that can meet the evolving requirements of an increasingly technology-savvy community. To ensure safe, powerful and ubiquitous communications, they require network control that can seamlessly secure information exchanges—inspecting each packet flowing through the system to safeguard data, devices and applications—without slowing communications. Speed and responsiveness must be maintained while the network is protected from cyber attacks that can have potentially devastating consequences on collaboration, instruction, assessment and research activities.
As educational institutions become increasingly dependent on networked communications, and as security risks intensify, transparent and trustworthy network protection becomes more and more critical. Security capabilities integrated into 3Com® wired and wireless networks and the proactive impact of TippingPoint™ intrusion prevention technology can ensure the safety of students, staff and information without compromising network speed or clogging valuable bandwidth.
